Christening Photography in Montpellier: A Greek Orthodox Baptism in France

Two cultures, one family, and a little boy at the heart of it all.

Christening photography in Montpellier, France, is a story that crosses borders, and this one was full of love. A Greek mother and a French father brought their two worlds together to baptise their little boy. The ceremony took place at the Sainte Philothée d’Athènes Orthodox Church, a peaceful place with beautiful stained-glass windows.

Christening photography in Montpellier: a Greek Orthodox baptism

Inside the church, everything felt calm and meaningful. First, the priest prepared the baptism while the family gathered close. Then came the moments that make a Greek Orthodox christening so special: a lit candle held between a couple, the icons on the stone wall, and the whole family posing before the wooden iconostasis. Outside, the day stayed just as sweet. Two men carried a large copper vessel under a tree, while a little girl blew bubbles along the garden path.

Family portraits around Montpellier

After the ceremony, we walked through the city together. We stopped beneath a large cedar tree in the park, on the steps of the triumphal arch at the Promenade du Peyrou, and in front of the stone towers of Montpellier Cathedral. On a narrow street decorated with bunting, the father carried his baby on his shoulders. Later, in the park, he lifted him into the air while the mother watched. These are the photographs I love most: honest, warm and full of life.

A christening is the start of a long story, and I was honoured to photograph the first pages of this one.
