A centuries-old church, a family together, and a new beginning.
Christening photography in Kantza, near Athens, means working in places full of history. This baptism took place at the Byzantine church of Palaiopanagia, in the Paiania area. Inside its peaceful walls, faith, tradition and tenderness came together as the family celebrated their little one.
First came the priest’s blessing. Then the baby was immersed in the font, followed by the washing of the hair and the dressing in fresh clothes. Throughout the ceremony, I stayed quiet and unobtrusive, so the family could simply be present. The small details are part of the story too: the embroidered towel, the little waistcoat and flat cap, and the two large bells hanging outside the church.
After the ceremony, the family gathered outside. A father lifted his baby into the air in front of the bells. Meanwhile, children shared treats from paper cones, and a couple sat on the stone steps with their toddler. Instead of posed portraits, these are the unplanned moments I love most.
